Christian rapper Lecrae scored his first ever No. 1 album when Anomaly topped the Billboard 200, with 88,000 copies sold in its first week. On Thursday last week, he stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to share some secrets on his single “Nuthin.”
“My producer Gawvi called me into the studio and said, ‘I’ve got this crazy song,’” he recounted to Fallon’s “How I Wrote That Song” segment. “He’s always got a set-up for every song. He can’t just play it for you. He’s gotta tell you this long story about how he was inspired.”
Gawvvi’s inspiration was the 1995 West Coast hip-hop single “I Got 5 On It” by the Luniz, and he wanted to create an “up to date” version of it for 2014. Lecrae loved the beat and resolved to put lyrics behind it that night.
He calls the end product, which appears on his No. 1 album, “A battle cry for substance in music.” “Nuthin” currently sits at No. 12 on Hot Christian Songs. In its 11 weeks on the tally, it has peaked at No. 2.
