ALBUM REVIEW: EGO - "FIRSTEPS"

RECORD REVIEW

Album – First Steps

Artiste – Ego Ogbaro

Year – 2013

Ego Ogbaro has finally released one of the most anticipated albums of the decade. She warmed herself into the hearts of many since her Lagbaja days and time has not changed that.

‘First Steps’ opens with a Gospel inspired “Amazing” featuring rapper, Ebubedike formerly known as Cage. Subtle, yet groovy are the words to describe this song. Ego paints a human picture of the Almighty and showers praise on Him for His Grace in her life.

The first single “Fall In Love” off this project sits comfortably on track 2. It got favourable reviews three years ago and maintains its appeal till date.

Ego displays poetic gusto on a Jazz wrapped “Never Knew” and triggers emotions on her acoustic rendition of Onyeka Onwenu’s classic “Bia Nulu”. She uses her own words to do justice to Fela’s “Palava” over guitar strums by Kunle Ayo.

In an industry where many have trouble with writing and composition, Ego drives this album with words and meaning to help you savour the purpose of each song. “I Believe” is a powerful message of hope; words cannot express the depth of this track. It speaks to the man inside and the man in the mirror.

Nene Soul Diva joins forces with Ego to uphold and celebrate the power of togetherness and sisterhood on “Sista”. The flow and tempo of the album go notches up with “Follow You Go” featuring Tai’Chy and “Fall In Love Remix” featuring impressive rap additions by IBK ‘SpaceshipBoi’ and Eva.

Legendary Cobhams takes major credit for the production of the breathtaking 10-Tracker with support by Nathaniel Bassey (Co-Producer) and IBK ‘SpaceshipBoi’ (Track 9). The lyrical and vocal renditions of this project are flawless as well as the mastering.

The value of this album pardons the fact that fans and music enthusiasts had to wait for about 6 years to see Ego take her ‘First Step’.

Score: 4/5
